The brief
A reel packs a gear train, a drag system, a click mechanism, bearings and seals into a small, light body that has to feel precise for years, in fresh and salt water. Every part is made in volume, so tolerances and processes decide both how it feels and what it costs.
The client wanted improvements worth protecting, and a design that would stay easy to make.
What we did
We turned the client’s ideas into detailed 3D CAD with fully defined assemblies, and engineered new drag control and quick-release spool mechanisms for smooth, robust operation and patent eligibility. Materials were chosen to take weight out while keeping the reel durable in fresh and salt water, and FEA on the high-load components showed they would carry their loads.
Photorealistic renders supported pre-launch marketing, and prototype-ready models went to CNC machining for testing. Over several generations of reels for the same client, the work has covered drag assemblies, click mechanisms, gearboxes, shafts, bearings, bushings and seals, through to production-ready parts.
Results
- Over 15% lighter than the original designs, with no loss of durability
- Design cycle time cut by over 30%
- New drag and quick-release spool mechanisms designed to be patentable
